MIYAMOTO Shufu

Born: 1950, in Fukuoka, Japan
Medium: Woodblock

Miyamoto Shufu is an established artist, who has lived in the city of Kyoto, since 1981. His original training in art was studying oil painting under the master Iioka Osamu. During the early 1970’s he began to explore silkscreen and lithography techniques. Miyamoto now prefers to devote his creative energies exclusively to exploring the traditional Japanese printmaking medium of the woodblock.

He has learned how to evoke the still beauty of nature in his work. Miyamoto is particularly fond of water scenes, and the special effects of light tempered by reflections in water, or mists rising from a river. The mastery of fine details and delicate textures have gained him well deserved recognition. He is very skilled at using bokashi to create fine gradations of color. The degree of subtlety he displays is often difficult to achieve with the woodblock medium, which requires a separate block for each different color in a composition.
