Liza RIDDLE Born: 1953, San Mateo, CA Liza studied Zoology and Art at San Jose State University. She then received her Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning at University of California, Berkeley. It’s not surprising that her minimalist ceramic sculptures express nature’s powerful forces and reflect the earth’s elemental palette of colors. They evoke fire, desiccation and ultimately, the transformation of the landscape, whether from natural or human causes. Liza explores these concepts using simple geometric forms: spheres, hemispheres, cubes, and wedges. The resulting works are subtle yet resonate with contained energy - they may have been charred by fire or cracked by drought. Riddle invites viewers to imagine what proceeded and might follow the moment she has recorded in clay, while reflecting on nature, the effects of climate change, and how our world is changing over time. Riddle has received awards for her work nationally and internationally, including the prestigious International Ceramics Competition in Mino, Japan (2018), the NCECA Competition in the U.S. (2017) and accepted into the 62nd Faenza Prize Competition in Faenza, Italy (2023). Selected Exhibitions: DZINE Gallery, San Francisco, CA |
