HIGASHI Kaoru Born: Hyogo, Japan in 1957 Medium: Color etching Kaoru Higashi received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from the Osaka Kyoiku University of Arts in 1979. She taught art for several years and also began to travel extensively. Trips to Europe, Indonesia, and the US coincided with meeting other artists who had studied abroad. In 1992, Kaoru began an MFA program in California at the San Francisco Art Institute. Before her 1994 graduation she also did further studies in printmaking at KALA Institute in Berkeley. Since returning to Japan, the artist has been active at Atelier Ohtotsu, an etching studio established in 1975 and modeled after S.W. Hayter’s world-famous printmaking workshop in Paris. In this environment, the artist is nurtured by daily contact with other Japanese print artists. For her artwork, Kaoru works mostly in the etching medium. Her favored theme recently has been a series entitled Tate/Yoko, or Vertical/Horizontal. These boldly colorful images done in small editions explore both line and texture. The artist uses overlay of color done with separate printings of the etched metal plates. Some textures are reminiscent of brush strokes sweeping across the page. There is great vitality and energy in these abstract works.
