La Balance, Chinois (The Scales, Chinese)

Illustrated in Miles No. 54. Note the several printings of blacks and grays on the gentlemen's hats. The anxious look on the face of the client is appealing, as are the bright reds of chair, ring and glasses.

18.5x14 inches, conservation matted to 24x20

Condition:
Excellent color and impression. Very faintest matline well away from the image.

Tea Jar red seal, pencil signed. JP Watermark in corner.

Notes: I love the attentiveness of these gentlemen, the subtle five o'clock shadows, and the black on black design in their caps. Miles notes 'althought there are no metallics or lacquers (the wartime exigencies were upon him) Jacoulet achieved a remarkable richness by repeating his red pigment in a descending triangle.'
