Title:
Shih-te - sold

This image is often paired with "Han Shan" (literally "cold mountain") who was a reclusive 9th Century Chinese poet. Shih-te was a local monk who worked in the kitchens and would bring scraps to his hermit friend. They are some of the first Zen eccentrics. Shih-te symbolizes practice and contact with the world and is usually pictured with a broom. And in Mayumi's deft hands, he is transformed into a female figure.
