Title:
Yonezawa Kasane Isho Tansu

Tansu from Yonezawa in Yamagata prefecture (northern part of the main island of Honshu) are noted for intricate metalwork. This is an especially wide chest with a striking design. The two pieces are the same height and could be separated and placed side by side or back to back for a varied arrangement.

Dimensions:
35.25H x 47W x 17D

Condition:
Very good with some dings to lacquer at top front

Medium:
Two pieces, lacquered sugi (Cryptomeria Cedar) case. Drawer fronts are kiri wood (Paulownia) and drawer interiors are sugi; large metal lock plates.

Year:
Meiji Era, c. 1880s.

Notes: This tansu has two large drawers, two slightly smaller, and three small ones (two behind the hinged door at bottom right).
