Title:
Kura in Tomonoura

A Kura is a Japanese storehouse--thick-walled, often covered with white-washed plaster, and with ceramic tiled roofs--important to protect valued items from the periodic fires that swept through cities built of wooden houses. Well-to-do families might have one behind their home, and frequently merchants would construct large ones to help indicate their success. They are sometimes referred to by the Chinese name "godowns."

Condition:
very good with slight overall fading.

pencil signed, jizuri sal, brushed signature with red artist"s seal.

Notes: I love the beautiful reflections in the water in this woodblock print. Tomonoura has been famous for centuries for its bay and port. It is located between Hiroshima and Okayama on the Inland Sea.
