Jason SANOVICH

Jason Sanovich began studying ceramics while at high school in California’s South Bay.  After graduation, he moved to Santa Cruz and took more ceramics classes at Cabrillo College earning an A.A. degree, and then moved to the north shore of Maui.  Sanovich practiced at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao, where he was influenced by several different artists.  He also worked as a sculptor’s assistant and was represented by several galleries on the North and South Shore of Maui. 

Jason eventually left Maui for Northern California where he earned a B.A. degree in ceramics at Humboldt State University through their directed studies program.  While there, he worked as a lab technician firing the electric and gas kilns and served as a teaching assistant.

After having a studio in Santa Cruz for several years, Sanovich moved to Mendocino.  He currently makes high-fire functional glazed work in his own studio on the Mendocino coast.  Jason creates more unique pieces with soda and wood-firings at the Mendocino Art Center.  He also wood-fires in Nick Schwartz’s anagama (cave kiln) at Flynn Creek Pottery in Comptche, California and at a newly constructed anagama in Albion.  These are generally week-long firings, during which fly ash and embers from pine and oak build up on the clay surfaces spontaneously creating natural colors and textures.
