NISHIMURA Ryo
Born: 1993 in Kyoto
Medium: drypoint and etching

After graduating with a Bachelors degree from Kyoto Seiko University of Art in the Print Department, the artist then earned a graduate degree from the same institution.

Ryo’s images include themes such as life and death, life cycles and eternity. He says these incorporate the special characteristics of drypoint which uses both weak and strong lines, and sometimes a blurring of lines.  He says he likes to express polarity with the use of black and white in his work.

This young man has had exhibitions in Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagasaki and received awards and recognition at many.  For the famous CWAJ Print Show held in October, 2018, he was awarded the Young Printmaker Award.

Ryo Nishimura is inspired by the movement of smoke, fire, oil in water, clouds and water.  He has explored images of foods, abstractions and mechanical structures.  The care with which he creates these small-edition drypoint prints bespeaks a man who will become a powerful voice in the world of Japanese printmaking.
