Daniel Kelly

After being raised in Montana, Daniel Kelly received BFA and MS degrees in Oregon, did ceramics and blown glass, and then worked in San Francisco. He moved to Kyoto in 1977 to continue studies with the master woodblock printmaker Tokuriki Tomikichiro. His artistic work has greatly broadened since that time. Now Daniel works in a variety of additional media--lithography, etching, cement relief block prints, as well as painting. Themes have ranged from quiet landscapes to bold colorful images of fruit and koi. For several years he explored the themes of chochin paper lanterns and ceramic bowls. More recently daniel offers us innovative self-portraits and images of tatooed young women.

Textural qualities are important in many of Daniel Kelly’s work--fine handmade papers, chine colle, tatami straw mats, and encaustic add a dimensional aspect to the art. He has developed a method of doing block prints by applying cement to a wooden plank and sculpting it into a raised surface which will hold ink for printing. Each color requires a separate block and separate printing, just as in original woodblock prints. A special oversized press and very heavy duty handmade Nepalese papers are required to complete this process. In every piece, Daniel challenges the viewer to look beyond initial observations and to study the myriad effects created in texture, color, line and light. Daniel Kelly’s work has been shown throughout the world and is included in many major museum collections. Currently, he lives and works in Kyoto with periodic visits to the United States.
